What this calculator does

This calculator answers the question most income investors actually have: how much do I need invested today to produce $X per year in dividends by year N? It runs the standard dividend projection in reverse — given your target annual income and the yield, dividend growth, and contribution assumptions you'd model with the regular calculator, it computes the upfront capital you'd need to put in today to reach that target. The math works in closed form because the projection is linear in starting capital, so the solve takes no iteration and no guesswork.

How to use it

Start with the income target — annual dividends, in today's dollars, that you want to be receiving by the end of the projection. Pick a realistic horizon (most users model 15-30 years). Set yield, dividend growth, and share-price growth based on the investments you'd actually buy; dividend ETFs historically grow payouts 6-8% per year. Add monthly or annual contributions if you plan to keep saving — those reduce the required upfront investment by the income they themselves generate. Leave DRIP on unless you specifically want to model spending dividends along the way.

Frequently asked questions

What if my monthly contributions already cover the target?

The calculator detects this and reports zero required upfront investment. With aggressive contribution rates over long horizons, dollar-cost averaging alone can reach significant dividend income — though the per-year average matters more than the total contributed. If the result says zero upfront, you've found a savings rate that gets you there without a starting lump sum.

Why does a small change in yield or growth produce a huge change in required initial?

The projection compounds yield, dividend growth, and time. Each input multiplies the others in the final-year income, so a one-percentage-point change in dividend growth over a 25-year horizon roughly halves or doubles the required upfront capital depending on direction. Use realistic — slightly conservative — numbers. Overshooting by being optimistic at year-one rarely recovers if the assumed growth doesn't materialize.

Does the result account for inflation?

No. The target income you enter is in today's dollars; the projection grows the dividend stream in nominal dollars. If you want a real-dollar target, multiply your goal by (1 + inflation)^years before entering it. For example, a $50,000-in-today's-dollars target with 3% inflation over 25 years becomes about $105,000 in nominal dollars at year 25.
